FAQ -Wanted to know more? below are some of the questions people ask me.

Why is this site called Jade Illustrations?
I wish to use my name for my Art Gallery, because an art gallery represents the artist, But Pek-Leng is not an easy name to remember, and I wish to find a word that represents my name, my passion and myself, therefore I have chosen “Jade”. Pek-Leng stands for Royal/Green Jade, and Jade also represents our oriental culture which I am very proud of. (Of course I love jade too +wink+)

What Medium/Media you use?
I am able to use a couple of mediums, starting with pencils, inks, markers, acrylics, gouache, watercolour, Colour pencils, sometimes I use pastels, and of course my forte is Digital art, such as Photoshop painted, Vector graphics with Corel or freehand.

What programmes do you use to paint your work?
Adobe Photoshop! No doubt…

What programmes do you use for Vector Works?
Corel draw and Freehand

Where do you get your ideas from?
Well the list is endless, I get inspirations from many places, whether it be real life, stories, games, books, songs… All I can say is exposures gives me more ideas and build up my character in my works, and Internet is my best buddy to achieve that.

What is really your style?
Hmm…. You got me there? I am fickle with my style, Highly flexible eager to try new things as long as it brings out the best in the picture I create. But if you want to know what others say of my personal art, elegant, feminine, soft, gentle, magical, new age, vibrant, shiny…

Can you design a tattoo for me?
Sorry I cannot do it, though I got nothing against body art, in fact I like tattoo art and designs, but I cannot bring myself to encourage it. You may use artworks that I have created, for your tattoos. Just remember Tattoo is permanent, I dun wish to be the cause of your regrets in future.

Can I use your works on my site?
As long as it is a non profit site, with no commercial value, it is fine with me, though you are required to state on your site, credits of the picture and links to me. Do have the courtesy of dropping me a mail, as experience tells me that people might use it on “certain” sites which I dun wish to see my work there. +shudder+ Of course I do wish to know you too.

Who on earth are you?
I am a designer from Singapore. Due to my profession, I am trained in rendering, and have some of the good mediums and materials, at my disposal. +grin+
Have always been working on designs to please people, so thought of doing art/illustrations that pleases me, and for all I know, I am drawing to please others too. hee hee
Nothing glamour about me accept I love art and design since my high school days, curious and eager to learn all forms of art and design, reading and studying art and design, doing little experiments with different mediums and styles.
A person on endless pursue of knowledge, as knowledge helps in her life, her works and her thirst hee hee, frequent the net, and search engines are my best companions in my quest for knowledge. +wink+

How do you create these illustrations?
Well something this is a short list I did for some of the nice people who e-mailed me.

Step 1: Getting inspired, deciding what I wish to draw, which helps compose a simple composition in mine.

Step 2: Drawing the elements, a good way to improve is to see other artist work, or just getting expose to many photos or pictures of your liking, these observations serves you very well, in drawing,
eg. I saw this pretty necklace, some nice poses from stock photos, maybe a nice dress I saw in a Greek painting, putting them together or just draw inspirations from them I could use them to dress up my characters in my drawings.

Step 3: Colouring, you can see that I use a couple of different mediums in my art, some are colour pencils, some are Digital ,Watercolour, gouache and the list goes on... expensive hobby fortunately enough I always have these material in hand due to my profession ( designer). Looking at the picture I decides which medium best brings out the "feel" I wish to achieve, or I just use what is handy.

How do you work with Colour pencils?
Maybe I do a little of explaining on colour pencils since I do not intend to create a tutorial for that soon. I too am new to this medium, I use it as I wish when I deemed fit, so my methods might not be right. Of for a start I will work on a simple sketch with pencil, after which I start shading and gently shadow areas to help me define the figure in 3D, with a shadow colour (tough to explain you got to know the principles of light to choose the right colour, but in short a darker shade of colour of the item. shade in the light colours, then slowly adding darker tone till you reach the darkest part of the shadow area.

Colour pencil unlike others are made of waxy substance, which prevents other colours to be applied onto the same area, if you filled it up completely is best if you can decide before hand what colours goes where and how to blend them. I blend colours like the way i blend my paints, (check the colour wheel concept there much to learn there too)

What other things do I have to learn for illustrations?

The studies involve is endless, but I do recommend reading books of "colour wheel ." and study some "principle of lights" is also good so you will know where to shade what colour to create the 3d effect; and also look at other artworks, some are not that keen about these colour wheels and principles of light, yet they look great too, it all depends on what is it that you wish to achieve. I love light, that's why I am trying hard to understand that, and I am still learning. OBSERVATION ... OBSERVATION ... that is vital.

You like Anime?
Sure!

Are you inspired by anime?
Hmm… most of my past works are… though occasionally I still draw anime inspired pictures now.

Can you work on a commission for me?
Send me a mail with descriptions of what you wish to do and I will get back to you ASAP.

How do you get to way you are now?
I got off from bed, climb to my computer and start replying to these mails?!
Just kidding. Hmm… all I can say is a keen interest, perseverance, and never stop learning.

Are you fashion designer?
No!!! I hardly know how to sew a dress. I just like to design costumes for some of my characters.

Do you do designs too?/ Do you design Websites too?
Yes I do you can visit my Design Portfolio, for samples. Jade Studios.

Do you have tutorials?
Nope! though very much wish to create one to help artist or hobbyist start this wonderful past-time. Maybe in time I will.

Can you give me pointers?
I can try, I have not got the time to give full scale comments on artworks, please ask specific questions. Like "How do you create those snow like textures with water colour? I prefer to answer technical questions, I do not comment on artworks or advise how should one do it, as I encourage exploration of styles and techinques. Oh! by the way the answer for the above question is sprinkle salt over wet areas, because the the salt will absorb the paints and lighter crystal-like spots will appear.
